The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has confiscated two bank lockers belonging to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Agrani Bank, intensifying the ongoing financial probe against her.
CIC Director General Ahsan Habib confirmed the development yesterday, saying both lockers-numbered 751 and 753-were sealed as part of the investigation.
He told media on Wednesday that the contents of the lockers remain unknown, as a detailed assessment is still underway.
This latest action comes just a week after another locker in Hasina’s name was seized at Pubali Bank’s Motijheel corporate branch.
During that operation on 10 September, investigators uncovered a joint savings account shared by Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana, containing Tk44 lakh, alongside a fixed deposit receipt (FDR) worth Tk12 lakh under Hasina’s individual name.
Officials said the CIC is now expanding its inquiry to determine whether Hasina holds further undisclosed lockers or accounts with other local banks.
Sources indicated that cross-checking with several financial institutions are in progress to map the full extent of her banking footprint.
The moves are part of a broader NBR-led investigation into allegations of large-scale tax evasion by the former prime minister, who fled the country following her removal from power in the July Uprising last year.
As part of the probe, Hasina’s personal bank accounts have already been frozen, and multiple financial transactions are being reviewed to trace potential irregularities.
While the precise holdings within the newly sealed Agrani Bank lockers remain uncertain, officials suggest they could contain documents, jewelry, or other high-value assets. The CIC has said it will disclose details once the inventory process is complete.
The discovery of additional lockers marks a significant step in the investigation, underscoring the tax authority’s efforts to trace hidden wealth and recover possible untaxed assets linked to Hasina.
