2 more arrested over Sohag murder case

Two more suspects have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Md Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.

Kotwali Police of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Md Parvez (26) and Md Zahirul Islam (38) during a raid in Keraniganj on Wednesday morning. They were later produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman’s court, which granted a three-day remand for each.

According to Kotwali Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) and investigation officer Md Moniruzzaman, the police sought a 10-day remand for both accused. After a hearing, the court approved a three-day remand.

No defence lawyer was present during the hearing.
So far, eleven people have been arrested in connection with the case. They are Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, Titon Gazi, Md Alamgir, Monir alias Lamba Monir, Tarek Rahman Robin, Sajib Bepari, Md Rajib Bepari, Nannu Kazi, Rizwan Uddin alias Abhijit Basu, Md Parvez, and Md Zahirul Islam.

Among them, Monir, Alamgir, and Titon gave confessional statements in court on 17 July, followed by Sajib on 19 July and Mohin on 20 July. Meanwhile, Rajib remains in jail following the end of his remand.

According to the case details, on 9 July, Lal Chand alias Sohag, aged 39, was hacked, beaten, and crushed with stones near the gate of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital.

Sohag, son of Yusuf Ali Howlader of Purbo Namabari village in Keraniganj, had been running a scrap business in Rani Ghosh Lane in Old Dhaka for years.

Following the murder, Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. The police have also filed a separate arms case in connection with the incident.
