Two people were killed in an exchange of gunfire during a joint forces raid in the capital’s Mohammadpur area. The incident took place in the Chand Udyan neighborhood around 1:00 am on Thursday (February 20).
Additionally, five individuals were arrested during the operation.
Assistant Commissioner AKM Mehedi Hasan of Mohammadpur Zone Police confirmed the incident to the media, stating that several rounds of bullets, a foreign pistol, and a machete were recovered after the skirmish.
Police reported that a group of armed criminals suddenly opened fire on security forces during a routine patrol. In response, law enforcement returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
The deceased have been identified as Miraj Hossain, 25, son of Md. Shahjahan Ali from Nurabad village in Char Fashion upazila, Bhola. He was a tenant at Sandami’s house on Road No. 8 in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur.
The other victim, Md. Jummon, 26, was the son of Abdus Sattar from Deshbhui village in Gosairhat, Shariatpur. He was residing as a tenant in Huzur’s house on Road No. 5 in the same neighborhood.
Their bodies have been sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
Later, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate issued a press release confirming the deaths of two individuals and the arrest of five criminals.
According to the statement, security forces conducted the operation at approximately 12:30 am based on intelligence indicating that criminals were preparing for a mugging in the Chand Udyan area.
The statement further mentioned that as the security team blocked both ends of a narrow alley, the criminals suddenly opened fire from the rooftop of a one-story building.
In self-defense, the security forces retaliated, ultimately capturing five armed criminals.
During a subsequent search of the building, two bodies were discovered on the rooftop.
Authorities recovered a pistol, four rounds of ammunition, and a machete from the detained individuals, who have since been handed over to Mohammadpur police for legal proceedings.
The ISPR reiterated that such operations will continue to ensure public safety.
