Court Correspondent :

The government has formed two committees to recommend the withdrawal of ‘cases intended for harassment’ against innocent political activists and leaders over political feuds.

One committee will look into the issue at the district level while the other at the ministerial level, according to an announcement made by the Home Ministry’s Public Security Division on Sunday.

However, the notice did not clarify what period would be covered for these ‘harassment cases’.

Four-member district committees will be formed under the leadership of a District Magistrate and with an Additional District Magistrate as a member secretary.

A Superintendent of Police or a Deputy Commissioner in the case of metropolitan areas, and a Public Prosecutor- a Metropolitan Public Prosecutor in the relevant cases, will also be on the district-level committee.

The ministry-level committee will consist of six members led by the Law Advisor.

The members will be the Senior Secretary at the Home Ministry’s Public Security Division, Additional Secretary (Law and Order), Joint Secretary (Law) and representatives from the Ministry of Law, Judiciary, and Parliamentary Affairs (with none below the rank of Joint Secretary).

A Deputy Secretary, Senior Assistant Secretary, or Assistant Secretary from the Public Security Division’s Law-1 Wing will act as the member secretary of the committee.
