Staff Reporter :

Two units of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur have resumed electricity generation, supplying 240-250 megawatts per day to the national grid.

The plant, with a total capacity of 525 megawatts across three units, had been shut down due to mechanical issues.

While two units are now operational, the third unit has remained out of service for more than four years.

According to official sources, the 275-megawatt third unit restarted production on 28 February, while the 125-megawatt first unit became operational again on 22 February.

Together, these units are now contributing an average of 250 megawatts daily to the national grid.

At present, the third unit generates 180-200 megawatts per day, whereas the first unit produces 65-70 megawatts.

The second unit, which has a capacity of 125 megawatts, has been inactive since 2020 due to technical problems.

Abu Bakar Siddique, chief engineer of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant, said that the two units were repaired using locally produced machinery.

He added that the restored power supply has alleviated disruptions in irrigation, industrial activities, and household electricity consumption.

Chinese engineers from the contractor firm Harbin are currently working on the overhaul of the second unit, he further mentioned.
To sustain operations, the two functioning units require approximately 2,600 tonnes of coal daily.
