Tracy Ann Jacobson, U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, visited Meghna Group of Industries’ (MGI) subsidiary Sonargaon Seeds Crushing Mills Ltd. on Thursday (20 November).
She was welcomed by MGI Director Tanzima Mostafa and Barrister Tasnim Mostafa. Senior officials of MGI and representatives from the U.S. Embassy were also present.
During the visit, Ambassador Jacobson toured the soybean crushing facilities and highlighted the rapid expansion of Bangladesh U.S. agricultural trade.
She said, “We have signed a one-billion-dollar agreement for U.S. soybean imports with Meghna Group, City Group, and Delta Agro.
Just a year and a half ago, the import figure was 350 million dollars rising to 500 million this year and now approaching one billion. This is truly significant progress.”
She added that this growth is strengthening the economic relations between the two countries. High-quality U.S. soybeans benefit both American farmers and Bangladeshi companies especially large processors like Meghna.
Ambassador Jacobson further stated that the expanded trade will play an important role in deepening bilateral relations and reducing the trade deficit. She thanked Meghna Group for their hospitality. As the largest importer of soybeans in Bangladesh, MGI is playing a vital role in this partnership.
MGI Director Tanzima Mostafa said, “During his recent visit to the United States, our chairman pledged to import a substantial volume of U.S. soybeans.
Following through on that commitment, we have already imported more than 700,000 metric tons the highest in Bangladesh’s history.
Our target is to import one million tons. More than half of all U.S. soybeans imported into Bangladesh this year were imported by Meghna Group.”
