Authorities have announced that 19 temporary cattle markets will be permitted in Dhaka ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, under the jurisdictions of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
According to officials, 10 markets will operate under DNCC, while nine will be set up under DSCC. Both city corporations have already floated open tenders to lease spaces for five days to operate these markets.
Officials emphasized that no makeshift cattle markets will be allowed outside the designated areas. They have urged all sellers to bring and sell sacrificial animals only at the approved locations.
“We have so far received bids for seven temporary cattle markets under our jurisdiction,” said Dr. M Zillur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of DSCC.
Meanwhile, DNCC’s Public Relations Officer Farzana Bobi stated that tenders were floated for 11 markets, but the submitted documents have not yet been reviewed.
The cattle markets are expected to begin operations three days before Eid and may remain open for five days. Both city corporations will implement security measures, and any leaseholder violating government regulations will face legal consequences.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz previously highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness and keeping public roads clear during market operations.
Due to a court directive, popular markets at Aftabnagar and Meradia will not be allowed this year. However, the permanent market at Gabtoli will continue to operate, along with temporary markets in Bosila, Mirpur, Khilkhet, and Badda under DNCC.
DSCC will set up markets in areas including the open space at North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club and Sadek Hossain Khoka Field.
Both DNCC and DSCC have pledged to ensure proper market management and strict waste disposal monitoring throughout the Eid season.
