Sherpur (Bogra) Correspondent :
About 1600 bigha of arable land has been freed from waterlogging in Sherpur of Bogra after more than a century. These lands in the fields of Darimukund, Kanaikandar, Rajbari, Hatigara, Arangshail villages of Shahbandegi Union of the upazila were lying uncultivated. Farmers of the region have suffered losses of crores of rupees due to large amount of land left uncultivated due to flooding, the farmers said.
Going to the ground, it is known that there is a road from Sherua Battala of Shahbandegi Union to Brak Battala of Mirzapur Union, but there is no bridge or culvert on the road to drain the water. Due to which water cannot come out in monsoon. This creates permanent waterlogging. Out of 1600 bigha land, two brothers Abu Raihan and Abdul Latif own 24 bigha, Osman Gani owns 24 bigha, Abdul Hamid owns 5 bigha. Talking to them, it is known that they have been fighting with waterlogging for a long time.
The lands which are under water produced an average of 18 to 21 maunds of boro paddy. By selling that paddy, they made a living. They expressed their anger and said that due to lack of drainage system, waterlogging has occurred due to rain. We could not cultivate the land. Land owner Nurul Islam of Hatigara village said that my 15 bigha land has been submerged under water for almost 20 years. I have approached the Chairman of the Union Parishad and UNO and even the agricultural workers several times but got nothing but hope.
In view of our appeal to the current Chairman of Shahbandegi Union Parishad, Maulana Kazi Abul Kalam Azad, to arrange water drainage, he discussed with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and constructed the culvert by cutting the steep road through the allocation of the Upazila Parishad.
