A tree plantation Campaign and divisional tree fair have been inaugurated in Sylhet with the intention of building a green Bangladesh through planned afforestation.
A colorful rally was taken out in the city on Saturday afternoon to mark the fair. The rally started from Rikabi Bazar in the city and ended at the fair premises of Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa Field after circumambulating various roads of the city. The inaugural ceremony and discussion meeting were held there.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner (Acting) Subarna Sarkar presided over the inaugural ceremony.
Sylhet Range DIG SP (Operation and Traffic) Md. Aminul Islam, SMP Additional Police Commissioner Md. Masud Rana, Sylhet Police Superintendent Md. Mahbubur Rahman attend the ceremony as special guest.
At the beginning of the programme, Maulana Faisal Ahmed, Imam of Forest Quarter Jame Mosque, recited from the Holy Quran, Shyamapad Mishra recited the Gita, and Chandra Shekhar Barua recited the Tripitaka.
Sylhet Divisional Forest Officer Md. Humayun Kabir delivered the welcome speech.
He said that the purpose of organizing the fair is to highlight the importance of tree plantation and care and planned afforestation to maintain environmental balance.
At the inaugural programme, the speakers said that in order to make the tree plantation drive fruitful, it is necessary to plant fruit, forest and herbal seedlings across the country in large numbers, considering financial, environmental utility and nutritional value. The speakers emphasized on motivating everyone to plant trees.
Sylhet Divisional and District Administration, Forest Department officials, political leaders, teachers and students of various schools and colleges were present at the time.
Organized by the Sylhet Forest Department and in collaboration with the district administration, 56 stalls have been set up at the fair. The organizers said that various species of trees will be exhibited and sold from these stalls.
