A case has been registered in connection with the terrorist attack, looting and vandalism at Laldighi Hawkers Market in Sylhet city.
Sylhet district labor leader Md Ruhul Amin Rubel filed the case in Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday (August 22). In the case,
Sylhet City Corporation’s recently deposed mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, 13 people have been named and 250 others have been named as defendants.
Magistrate of the court Abdul Momen took cognizance of the case and ordered the OC of Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station to arrest the accused in the FIR and hand them over to the court.
The defendants named in the case are Sylhet City Corporation’s newly deposed and absconding mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury (69), SMP Sylhet Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Azbahar Ali Sheikh (50), SMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime North) Md Sadek Dastgir Kauchar (40). ), Kallol Goswami, in-charge of Bandar Bazar police outpost of the city, Moin Uddin, newly transferred officer-in-charge of Kotyali Model Police Station, Rumon Ahmad (32), the leader of the extortionist hawker league, Sylhet Metropolitan Awami Hawkers League president Rakib Ali (50), mayor’s PS Shahid Chowdhury. (55), Sylhet district Awami League leader Md. Zillur Rahman Dara (50), Bangabandhu Generation League Sylhet Metropolitan organizing secretary Md.Surat Ali (46), hawkers league leader Khokon Ahmad (42), Suman Ahmad (36) and Jubo League leader Abdul Mukit. (50).
It is alleged in the case that the accused are extortionists and terrorists. They did not get the demanded contribution from the hawkers and on the afternoon of July 23, they launched an armed attack on the fully populated hawkers market across Laldighir in the city. At this time, the attackers looted goods worth lakhs of rupees from the shops of the traders and damaged the shops by ransacking them. They even besieged and detained the businessmen and physically abused them.
Meanwhile, they arrested eight hawker traders and took them to Kotwali police station and tortured them all night. The next day, on July 24, he sent them to the court.
