12 killed in road crashes across country

At least 12 people, including four in Noakhali, were killed and many others injured in several road crashes across the county on Saturday.

In Noakhali, at least four people, including army personnel, were killed when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw fell into a roadside canal after being hit by a truck at Begumganj upazila on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred at Chandraganj Purba Bazar on the Noakhali-Lakshmipur regional highway of the upazila.

The deceased have been identified as Rahmat Ullah Bhuiyan, 65, army personnel Fazlul Karim, 50, and Alauddin, 45, hailed from Lakshipur district.

The identity of the other person could not be known instantly.

Chandraganj Highway Police Inspector Ruhul Amin confirmed the matter to the media saying that a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was going towards Begumganj upazila from Lakshmipur with passengers.

On the way, a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction collided with the auto-rickshaw in that area. The two vehicles fell into a roadside canal. Four people including auto-rickshaw driver were killed in this connection.

“Rescue operation is still underway. Three bodies have been recovered so far. One body is still in the canal. Details will be briefed in this regard once the rescue operation ends,” the Inspector added.

In Munshiganj, three members of a same family were killed and two others injured after a covered van rammed a private car on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Gazaria upazila on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred around 4 am in Baushia area of the upazila.

The victims have been identified as Alamgir Hossain, 50, son of Hossain Ali Bepari of Kadra village in Shahrasti upazila of Chandpur district; his younger son Zahirul Islam, 30, and his maternal aunt Rahela Begum, 50.

Gazaria highway police outpost in-charge Md Humayun Kabir said: “The bodies are currently in the police outpost. Efforts are underway to identify the covered van.

Legal action in this regard is under process.” Earlier, a Dhaka-bound private car carrying them was hit by a covered van from behind when it came in front of the Mana Bay water park early Saturday. The car fell into the ditch on the side of the road.

At that time, three people including Alamgir Hossain died on the spot. The fire service workers rescued the two injured including the driver and sent them to the upazila health complex.”

In Gazipur, two construction workers were killed and many others injured when a truck collided with a pick-up van in Sreepur upazila of the district early Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Rasel Mia, 25, and Abu Sufian, 25, from Sunamganj district.
Sreepur Fire Service station officer Belal Ahmed said the accident occurred when a dump truck hit a Mawna-bound pick-up van carrying construction workers, leaving Rasel dead on the spot and six others injured.

The injured were taken to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared Sufian dead.

In Madaripur, at least two passengers of the easy bike were killed and three others were injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an easybike in Rajair upazila of the district on Saturday. The accident took place on Saturday (04 May) morning at Kathalia Bridge area of Rajair-Srinadi regional road.

The deceased are Hossain Munsi (55) son of Nawab Ali Munsi of Charghunsi village of Ishibpur Union of Rajair Upazila and Dhalu Howladar (60) son of Lalmia Howladar of the same area.

In Narayanganj, a passenger of a battery powered easy bike named Nure Mustafa (24) was killed by a truck in Fatulla,. The accident took place on Saturday (May 4) around noon.
