12 fishermen rescued from Bay of Bengal, 1 missing

Some 12 drowning fishermen were rescued by the Indian fishermen from the Bay of Bengal in Indian Territory and one of them (fisherman) named Ibrahim (38) is still missing.

Now the rescued fishermen are staying under the custody of Patharprotima PS under Kakdwip area in Indian, according to a delayed report received here through the newsmen of Rayenda, the Upazila Headquarters of Sharankhola in Bagerhat district.

Joykrisna Haldar, Secretary of the West Bengal Fishermen Association disclosed the matter to a local newsman in Saturday morning over mobile phone and added, 12 floating Bangladeshi fishermen were recovered from the sea in Saturday morning and handed over them (fishermen) to the police of Patharprotima PS.

It is also added, the recovered 12 fishermen were floating in the sea catching a dried bamboo in the water territory of India and after finding the matter the fishermen of an Indian fishing boat named “FB, Paromita-6”.

On the other hand, Joydeb Das, the owner of the sunken fishing boat “FB.Kaushik” hails from Nalua village under Bakerganj Upazila in Barishal district told over mobile phone, my fishing boat “FB. Kaushik” went to the Bay of Bengal along with 13 fishermen to catch fish, At the dead of night, September 13 the trawler was engaged in catching fish near the Fair Buoy it was caught with a cyclonic storm and consequently, the fishing boat capsized in the deep sea at route No.762 and all the fishermen were thrown out in the deep sea. 12 of them caught a bamboo and went into Indian water territory and rescued by the Indian fishermen.

But fisherman Ibrahim is still missing. The owner of the sunken fishing boat complained, the rescued 12 fishermen are now still under the police custody. They urged upon the concerned authorities to hand over them to Bangladesh Navy. But no action was taken till writing of this report.
