Twelve individuals accused of embezzling Tk568 crore from the Market Development Fund (MDF) have surrendered before a Dhaka court and secured bail in a case filed at Gulshan Police Station.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman granted them bail on Monday after a hearing, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki confirmed.
The case names Salman F Rahman, former private industry and investment adviser to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with 26 others, as accused.
Those granted bail include Syed Moinul Haque, executive committee member of the IGW Operators Forum (IOF); Brig Gen Md Abdul Hannan (retd); Ashiq Ahmed; Gazi Md Salahuddin; Hafizur Rahman; Khalid Islam; Md Mahtabul Amin; Sohel Sharif; Tazin Alam; Nadir Shah Qureshi; Mir Nasir Hossain; and Musfiq Manzur, chief commercial officer (CCO).
The accused appeared before the court and sought bail through their lawyers, while the prosecution opposed their petitions. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail to each on a Tk5,000 bond.
The case was filed on 18 September by Taufiqul Islam, Senior Assistant Director of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), on behalf of the commission, accusing the defendants of fraud and embezzlement from the MDF.
