Md Mojahidul Islam:
The rise of online gambling in the country is leading to increased crime and societal issues. In response, the central bank has implemented strict measures to curb these activities.
On Wednesday, May 28, the Payment Systems Department of Bangladesh Bank instructed all banks and financial institutions to enhance monitoring of online gambling transactions. They should regularly check for any merchant or customer involvement in online gambling. The agency may utilize artificial intelligence (AI) technology if needed.
If a customer or merchant is suspected of online gambling, immediate action should be taken, and law enforcement should be notified right away.
Bangladesh Bank emphasized the need to inform customers about the dangers of online gambling. It also stated that businesses registered with the bank must operate in their designated areas. The new ‘Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025’ needs to be adhered to as well.
The directive must be implemented urgently. The central bank has instructed all relevant banks and financial institutions to follow it strictly.
